Genius Loci
a; site analysis & concept development
b; interpretive center
To start off our second project, we are to interact with our site to acknowledge its society, culture, history and the memories of Valley of Hope, a leprosy settlement located in Sungai Buloh, Selangor. We are to reflect the 'spirit' of that place, or its ‘genius loci’. These qualities will inform the architectural concept and generators for Project 2. In Project 2, the design brief calls for an architectural response toward the sense of place with a strong engagement and relationship to the site and programmatic requirements.
personal interpretation
project 2a.1

As a personal interpretation, I have highlighted five keywords that reflects the genius loci of the place. The Valley of Hope leposarium manifest a 'communal' self sustaining community, the pitfall of the sense of 'trap', a place of finding love; 'marriage', the 'abandonment' throughout the years and finally the 'simplicity' of life living within the Valley of Hope.

interpretive centre
project 2b
The Valley of Hope interpretive centre was designed as a represented journey of a leper throughout the histories of this place. It reflects the ups-and-downs and the changes that lies within the everyday life of the patients. The emotions that runs along with them and the pain that the disease had caused. The interpretive centre creates an awareness and a reminder to all of the society to not take disease as a negligence.
