ARCHITECTURAL STUDIO I
(ARC60208)
This module is an introduction to preliminary design of the expression of the body relating to space. Exploring ideas and concept through interdisciplinary modes of art and design with good spatial quality. Through this module, there will be 3 assignments that are related to and from each and one another. The projects requires you to learn from the previous and enhance it into your next project.
Project 1 : Models and Tattoos: Expressions Through Design Principles
In this first assignment, we have to create 6 10m³ models. Each of the models should demonstrate a significant of different principles and elements. The models give the intention of generating various design.
Elements of design are the visual tools that the artist uses to create a composition. These are line, shape, form, texture and space. The principles of design are concepts used to organize or arrange the structural elements of design. Again, the way in which these principles are applied affects the expressive content, or the message of the work.
The outcome of the project is an architectural self-exploration, we are to explore forms and techniques that show creativity and identity and explained with vigor through your models and tattoo stamps.
1. Emphasis + Space
2. Material + Scale
3. Shape + Grouping
4. Mass + Connection
5. Texture + Balance
6. Lines + Rhythm
Tattoos
The monotonic tattoo is a representation of my main idea from my model artwork. It is a reflection that consturct into a 2d visual form.
From this project, I've learnt that there is no a so-called "perfect" design. Each artwork have its own uniqueness and meaning to it. The models and tattoo gives off a feeling that strengthens the understanding of the artwork.
Project 2 : 1:1 Tectonics: Design Principles, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration
Project 2 is a group project consisting of 7 person. Our group have me myself, Ryan Ng Zhen, Clement Tan Eng Chuan, Ho Cher Ting, Foong Yi Kang, Seanne Christian and Oi Hui Yi. We as a group have to work with bamboo to come up with a tectonic structure relating to anthropometric and ergonomic of the human body. Through this project
we will also learn about the characteristics of this special material and the life cycle of bamboo.
In exploring anthropometrics and ergonomics, the human body can perform countless actions as the body moves. Taking sleeping for example, there are infinite of positions to sleep, but is there a best posture to allow us to sleep in the best possible way? Therefore, the study of anthropometrics allows us to investigate more into the action of a human body. Whereas ergonomics relates how our body react to the environment and how we could radiate a sensation between the human and the space.
Week 1: Understanding of the bamboo
For starter, we have to present our research and understanding of the bamboo material and its usage throughout architecture. Some of our presedence study include the Bamboo Playhouse at the Perdana Botanical Garden, Green School of Bali, Indonesia and Kontum Indochine Cafe located at Vietnam.
Week 2: Models Workshop
In the second week, we as a team have to come up with a banal action to incorporate into our tectonic structure. Standing, leaning, climbing, stretching are the actions we came up with. Initially, we decided to go leaning as a banal action, but through some hard decision making between us we changed our action to stretching as it has more potential in combining a space with a stretching position. The workshop are held in studios to allow our tutors to assist our progress.
Week 3: Models Workshop II
The following week, we came up with different ideas and translating it into form using drawings and models of satay sticks. The models also have to be proportion to fit an ideal human in a smaller scale. We are also to be aware of the tectonic in relation of the form and space. To study how our bamboo will be constructed, we also went to bought some bamboo to learn about the tying methods and jointing using ropes.
Week 4-6: Fabrication of 1:1 Tectonic Structure
For the following weeks, we had spent most our days and nights working on our bamboo structure at an open space at Block E. It is tiring as we stayed hours under the sun working on our structure. We faced many difficulties and complications along the way but we stood together to solve the problem together. Even though, we are far behind other groups, we did not give up and do our best to finish our tectonic structure. The structure is separated into 2 parts, the skeleton and exoskeleton. It represents the human skeleton during stretching, as it contract and relax throughout the process. The ideology behind this structure is to help the person going into the bamboo structure de-stress as research actually proves that stretching your body boosts our energy and reduces anxiety. Hence, this bamboo structure guides you to perform the action when you are going into the tectonic structure.
Week 7: Submission and Presentation
After through thick and thin, we were finally ready for our presentation day. I learnt so much along the way from my friends and tutors. It was an amazing journey for me to build my first 1:1 structure in this course. The effort was totally worth it. The structure was built according to our expectation from our test models, we also added some extra bits here and there. Click to view our presentation board and tattoos stamp.
Project 3 : Interpretation and Representation: Principles, Tectonics and Sensory
The final project is an integration with the previous bamboo tectonic assignment. We have to deconstruct our structure and represent it in a different perspective. This project lets us further to develop and create conceptual narrative with our design. The requirements for this assignment is to have a 1:10 scale model for our structure with a limit of 10m³ with an appropriate space which is practical yet poetic.
